The team was founded in 1972 as a franchise of the World Hockey Association under the name Winnipeg Jets. After the WHA was dissolved in 1979, the Jets were admitted to the NHL along with three other teams. Before the 1996/97 season, the team moved to Phoenix and was renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2003, the team moved to Glendale and was renamed the Arizona Coyotes shortly afterwards.
