The team was founded in 1972 as a World Hockey Association franchise under the name Québec Nordiques. After the WHA was dissolved in 1979, the Nordiques were admitted to the NHL along with three other teams. After the move, the Avalanche developed into one of the best teams in the league and won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.
